Bereaved military family members will be able to travel free on National Rail services across Britain this Remembrance weekend, helping them attend services and commemorative events without paying for rail travel.
The new offer applies to 7 and 8 November 2026 and is being extended for the first time to one next of kin of a service person who died while serving in the Armed Forces.
Eligible family members can use the free travel to attend Remembrance events, including commemorations at the Cenotaph in London.
The offer is available to one next of kin of a service person who died while serving. Eligible family members must apply for their free ticket through the Defence Medical Welfare Service.
Applications must be made by 16 October 2026. The free rail travel will then apply to journeys made during the Remembrance weekend on 7 and 8 November 2026.
The Department for Transport said the extension is intended to ensure that travel costs do not prevent bereaved families from attending Remembrance services and honouring loved ones.
The initiative builds on existing free rail travel support for serving Armed Forces personnel and veterans.
The Rail Delivery Group and SSAFA have also welcomed the extension, highlighting the importance of supporting families who have lost loved ones while serving.
