Christmas markets are back, and Manchester travellers have a big advantage: you do not need a long-haul flight to get there.
From the giant Christmas market in Vienna to Prague’s Old Town Square and the festive streets of Cologne, several of Europe’s best-known Christmas cities are reachable with direct flights from Manchester. Some take little more than an hour, making a Christmas market break an easy option for a long weekend.
But there is a catch. The cheapest flight is not always the cheapest trip once you add baggage, hotel costs, airport transfers and the location of your accommodation.
So, which Christmas markets can you reach directly from Manchester, how long does each flight take, and which city gives you the best mix of festive atmosphere, travel time and value?
We have picked five worth considering for Christmas 2026, with the key routes, market dates, flight times and booking points to check before you go. TravelApp can combine your Manchester flights and accommodation into a package, with ATOL protection applying to eligible flight-inclusive holidays.
If you already know your dates, you can request a Christmas market quote from TravelApp UK and compare the complete trip rather than just the airfare.
Manchester is an excellent starting point for a European Christmas market break.
Cologne takes around 1 hour 35 minutes, Prague around 2 hours 15 minutes, Berlin around 1 hour 55 minutes, Vienna around 2 hours 25 to 30 minutes and Brussels around 1 hour 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the route and schedule. Manchester Airport's current destination pages confirm direct services to all five.
The tricky bit comes after you find the flight.
A £50 fare can look brilliant until you add a cabin bag, checked luggage and seat selection. Then you need a hotel. Then a transfer. Then you discover that your "central" hotel is a 30-minute journey from the market.
Booking separately is perfectly workable. It just means you have more pieces to line up.

There is no rule that a package will always be cheaper. The smarter comparison is the total cost and what is actually included.
The UK government's air passenger guidance also makes the distinction clear: financial protection depends on how your trip is booked, and flight-inclusive package holidays will typically have ATOL protection.
This is where choosing the right travel agency matters. A good UK travel agency should do more than find a flight. It should help you put the whole trip together, from the Manchester departure and hotel location to baggage, transfers, payment options and the protection attached to your booking.
That is the role TravelApp aims to fill. As a UK travel agency with ATOL and IATA credentials, TravelApp can arrange flights and accommodation together, while its travel team can help you compare the practical details that are easy to miss when booking each part yourself.
So instead of opening separate tabs for flights, hotels and transfers, you can start with your dates and budget and ask TravelApp to build the trip around them.
If Manchester is your preferred departure airport, start by comparing flights from Manchester, then ask TravelApp to price the wider Christmas market break.
Best for: Traditional German markets and the famous cathedral backdrop
Cologne does not need much help selling itself at Christmas.
The famous cathedral towers over the city's main festive scene, while wooden stalls fill the centre with crafts, decorations, food and seasonal treats.
The official Cologne tourism site confirms that the Christmas Market at Cologne Cathedral takes place in the heart of the city, with the cathedral directly behind the market and more than 100 free stage events.
Manchester Airport lists Cologne as a direct destination with a flight time of around 1 hour 35 minutes. Ryanair currently shows Manchester-Cologne flights for December 2026, while Jet2 has also included Cologne in its 2026/27 Christmas markets programme.
Why go: If you want the classic Christmas market experience, this is probably the easiest place to start.
There is more than one market in Cologne, too. Heinzels Winter Fairytale takes over parts of the Old Town, while the Harbour Christmas Market offers a different setting beside the Rhine.
For a two-night break, staying close to the centre is worth considering. You can spend more time walking between the markets and less time travelling back to your hotel.
Best for: Old Town atmosphere, historic streets and a good-value city break
Prague is what happens when you put a Christmas market in one of Europe's most recognisable historic centres.
The Old Town Square Christmas Market is scheduled for 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, while Wenceslas Square has its own market running through the festive period.
Manchester Airport lists Prague as a direct destination, with a flight time of around 2 hours 15 minutes. Ryanair currently shows Manchester-Prague flights for December 2026, and Jet2 includes Prague among its 2026/27 Christmas market destinations.
The appeal is not just the market.
You can walk from the Old Town Square to the astronomical clock, Charles Bridge and other central sights without turning the trip into a transport exercise. That makes Prague particularly good for a first European Christmas market break.
Food and drinks can also be relatively good value compared with some Western European capitals, although December demand still pushes up hotel prices.
For a short trip, look for accommodation within easy reach of the Old Town. You are paying for your time as much as your room.
Best for: Variety, multiple markets and a bigger city break
Berlin is not really a one-market destination.
That is the point.
You have a wide choice of festive markets across the city, so you can combine Christmas shopping with museums, restaurants, nightlife and sightseeing.
One standout for 2026 is WeihnachtsZauber at Gendarmenmarkt, running from 23 November to 31 December. VisitBerlin describes it as a market focused on arts and crafts, food and an international stage programme, with heated tents adding a little protection from Berlin's December weather.
Manchester Airport lists Berlin as a direct destination with a flight time of around 1 hour 55 minutes. Jet2 has also confirmed additional Manchester-Berlin Christmas services for winter 2026/27, bringing its Manchester operation to four weekly services during the relevant festive period.
Berlin is the better choice if you want your Christmas market to be part of a bigger city break.
The catch is size. Berlin is much larger than Cologne or Brussels, so hotel location matters. Choose your area based on the markets and attractions you actually want to visit.
Best for: Grand architecture, traditional markets and culture
Vienna goes big on Christmas.
The city's main market at Rathausplatz sits in front of Vienna City Hall and combines traditional stalls with food, crafts, decorations and an ice rink. For 2026, the market is scheduled from 13 November to 26 December.
There are plenty of alternatives, too, including markets at Schönbrunn Palace, Belvedere and Maria-Theresien-Platz.
Manchester Airport lists Vienna as a direct destination. Current airline schedules also show Manchester-Vienna flights with Ryanair, while Jet2 includes Vienna in its 2026/27 Christmas markets programme.
Vienna is particularly good for couples who want more than market stalls. You can combine the festive atmosphere with cafés, museums, historic buildings and evening concerts or cultural events.
For a weekend break, a central hotel can save a lot of time. The city's Christmas markets are spread across different areas, so being close to public transport is also useful.
Best for: Winter Wonders, food and a compact festive break
Brussels takes a slightly different approach.
Instead of one huge market, Winter Wonders spreads festive activity through the city centre. The 2026 event runs from 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with more than 200 chalets alongside attractions, lights, entertainment and the famous Grand-Place setting.
Manchester Airport lists Brussels as a direct destination and shows both Brussels Airport and Charleroi as the relevant airport codes. Brussels Airlines currently operates direct MAN-BRU flights, with a scheduled flight time of around 1 hour 20 minutes.
There is an important detail here. A Manchester flight to Brussels Airport is not the same as one to Charleroi. Both can be sold as Brussels flights, but they are different airports with different journeys into the city.
So do not compare the airfare alone. Add the airport transfer before deciding which option is actually better value.
And then there is the food. Belgian chocolate, waffles, fries and a proper Brussels restaurant make this one of the easier markets to combine with a short city break.
There is no universal winner. It depends on what you want from the trip.

If you want the classic Christmas market, start with Cologne.
Want Christmas markets plus historic streets and sightseeing? Prague is hard to beat.
Want several markets and a bigger weekend away? Berlin.
Prefer grand buildings, culture and a slightly more polished feel? Vienna.
Want food, chocolate and a compact city centre? Brussels.
If you are still deciding, you can compare TravelApp holiday packages and ask for the destination to be built around your dates and budget.
There is no single December price.
Christmas is peak season, and fares can move quickly as seats and central hotel rooms sell. Your dates, airline, baggage, hotel location and number of nights can all change the final cost.
Before comparing prices, include:
Return flights from Manchester
Cabin or checked baggage
Seat selection where applicable
Hotel and room type
Number of nights
Airport transfers
Local tourism taxes
Festive hotel meals or supplements
Public transport
Travel insurance
This is where a flight + hotel bundle can be useful. Instead of comparing two headline airfares, you can look at what the actual holiday costs.
For example, a slightly more expensive flight could be better value if it lands at a convenient time and gets you into the city early enough to enjoy the first day.
Likewise, a hotel that costs £30 more per night might be worth it if it puts you within walking distance of the market.
If you already know your destination and dates, TravelApp can price the main arrangements together.
Request a Christmas Market Quote
A hotel can be described as "central" without being particularly close to the Christmas market.
That might not matter on a week-long holiday. It matters when you have 48 hours.
Staying near the main market areas means you can walk out after breakfast, explore for a few hours, return to the hotel for a rest and head back out for dinner.
It is especially useful for families. Cold December evenings, tired children and a long journey back to a distant hotel are not exactly the festive experience anyone ordered.
When requesting a package, tell the travel adviser what matters most. It might be walking distance to the market, a family room, a particular hotel standard or easy access to public transport.
That detail can make the difference between a cheap room and a useful room.
Start with the final fare, not the number you first see in a search result.
Low-cost airlines can offer competitive December prices, but baggage rules differ. Check exactly what your fare includes before comparing it with another carrier.
Ryanair currently shows December 2026 fares on its Manchester-Cologne and Manchester-Prague routes, for example, but those headline fares are not the same thing as the cost of a complete city break.
Hand luggage deserves particular attention. A small personal bag and a larger cabin case are not necessarily treated the same way, and rules can vary between airlines and fare types.
Then check the arrival airport.
Brussels is the obvious example. A flight to Brussels Airport and one to Charleroi may both be marketed for a Brussels trip, but the onward journey is different.
Flight times matter too.
A very early departure might give you almost a full extra day in Europe. A late evening flight might be cheaper but leave you paying for another hotel night without getting much time in the city.
The best fare is the one that works for the whole trip.
For more protection against unexpected travel costs, it is also worth arranging suitable travel insurance before you go.
For a simple weekend away, booking your flight and hotel separately can work perfectly well.
A package becomes more useful when you want several parts of the trip arranged together and would rather not manage different booking conditions yourself.
For example:
Direct Manchester flight + central hotel + baggage + transfer
That is a much more useful comparison than simply asking whether a £60 flight is cheaper than a £75 flight.
There is also the protection question.
Eligible flight-inclusive package holidays can benefit from ATOL protection. Separate flight and hotel bookings may have different protection arrangements. The UK government recommends checking how your particular trip is protected before travelling.
You can also review TravelApp's booking conditions before confirming your holiday.
If you have fixed dates, a particular hotel or a preferred flight time, earlier is usually better.
Christmas market breaks are concentrated into a relatively short period. Popular December weekends can therefore put pressure on both flights and central hotels.
You do not necessarily need to book the moment the first Christmas flight appears. But waiting until the last minute when you need a specific hotel, room type and flight time gives you fewer options.
Flexibility helps too.
A Thursday-to-Saturday trip can price differently from Friday-to-Sunday. A midweek break can sometimes give you more choice, while travelling closer to Christmas usually means stronger demand.
If your dates are flexible, tell TravelApp that when requesting a quote. It gives the team more room to look at different combinations.
For the classic Christmas market experience, Cologne wins.
For a mix of markets, history and food, go for Prague.
For a larger city break with several markets, Berlin is the one.
For architecture, culture and a more elegant weekend, choose Vienna.
And for a compact break built around Winter Wonders, chocolate and good food, Brussels is difficult to ignore.
The important thing is not to choose based on the cheapest airfare alone.
Look at the flight time, arrival airport, hotel location and complete holiday cost together.
That is where a good Christmas market deal usually reveals itself.
A Christmas market break from Manchester should not require ten browser tabs just to work out where you are staying. Start with the basics: Manchester departure, destination, dates, number of travellers and hotel preference.
TravelApp can then look at the main arrangements together and build a quote around the trip you actually want.
You might want a central hotel in Prague, a family-friendly room in Cologne or a hotel close to public transport in Berlin. Those details are worth deciding before you simply click the cheapest flight.
Payment options are available on eligible bookings, so you can also check the current TravelApp payment options before confirming.
If you already know your destination, dates and number of travellers, you can request your custom TravelApp itinerary.

Five European Christmas markets. Direct options from Manchester. One less thing to organise before Christmas.
Quick answers to common questions. Reach out if you need more help.
Brussels and Cologne are among the quickest direct options from Manchester. Brussels Airlines currently lists Manchester-Brussels at around 1 hour 20 minutes, while Manchester Airport lists Cologne at around 1 hour 35 minutes.
Not necessarily. Airfares change according to dates, demand and availability, so there is no fixed rule that a travel agent will always be cheaper. TravelApp's advantage is being able to compare the flight, hotel and other arrangements together.
Eligible flight-inclusive package holidays can be ATOL protected. Protection depends on how your booking is structured, so check the ATOL details and documentation supplied with your specific package.
Prague and Vienna are particularly good choices for couples, with historic centres, restaurants, markets and evening entertainment. Cologne is another strong option if the Christmas market itself is the main attraction.
Cologne and Brussels are strong family options, particularly when you choose accommodation close to the main festive areas. A central hotel can reduce the amount of travelling needed during a short break.
Yes. TravelApp can arrange flight and hotel packages from Manchester around your preferred destination and dates. The exact inclusions and protection depend on the package you choose.
Booking early is sensible if you want a particular December weekend, central hotel or specific flight time. Popular dates can have less availability as Christmas approaches.
Yes. Tell TravelApp your dates, budget, number of travellers and what matters most, such as traditional markets, food, nightlife or a central hotel. The team can then help you compare suitable options.
