Heathrow Airport has resumed normal operations after flooding caused by a burst water main temporarily closed key access roads to the central terminal area over the weekend.
The disruption affected the Inner Ring Road West, restricting vehicle access to Terminals 2 and 3 from around 6:00 am BST. While flights continued to operate, heavy traffic congestion left many passengers facing long delays reaching the airport, with some missing their scheduled departures.
Heathrow has confirmed that all roads have now reopened and normal operations have resumed. However, travellers are still advised to allow extra time for their journey and consider using public transport where possible as traffic gradually returns to normal.
Importantly, the flooding was limited to the airport's road network, and there was no flooding inside the terminals. Flight operations continued throughout the incident.
A Heathrow spokesperson apologised for the disruption, thanking passengers for their patience while repair teams worked to restore access as quickly as possible.
The road closures caused severe congestion around the airport, particularly for travellers arriving by car or taxi. Some passengers reported spending more than an hour in traffic before reaching the terminals.
The disruption came during one of Heathrow's busiest travel periods, with the summer holiday season bringing exceptionally high passenger numbers through the airport.
