Flights have resumed at London Luton Airport after a lightning strike disrupted air traffic control equipment, but passengers may still face delays and cancellations.
Operations were temporarily suspended on Thursday, August 27, after severe thunderstorms affected the area and a lightning strike disrupted equipment used for air traffic control. The suspension lasted from around 5:40pm to 7:15pm, resulting in a number of flights being cancelled or diverted.
The disruption also coincided with severe weather and flash flooding on roads around the airport, adding to travel difficulties for passengers trying to reach the terminal.
London Luton Airport has confirmed that flights to and from the airport have now resumed. However, passengers have been warned that further delays and cancellations could continue while airlines work to recover their schedules.
Passengers travelling from Luton are advised to check their individual flight status directly with their airline before leaving for the airport. Those affected by cancellations or significant delays should contact their airline for information about rebooking and available assistance.
The disruption also affected flights approaching Luton, with some aircraft diverted while operations were suspended. Reports indicate that severe thunderstorms caused wider disruption across the region, including at nearby London Stansted Airport.
With operations now restored, passengers are advised to continue monitoring airline updates as schedules return to normal.
