Faro Airport (FAO) is the main airport for the Algarve, and it is one of the easiest sun destinations to reach from the UK. Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2, Wizz Air and British Airways fly direct from London, and there are further nonstop flights from Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Liverpool, Leeds Bradford, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast and more. Direct flights take around 2 hours 50 minutes from London and Birmingham, about 3 hours from Manchester and roughly 3 hours 20 minutes from Edinburgh. Schedules change by season, so compare current fares, baggage costs and departure times for your dates before you book.

Airlines are listed with the busiest first. Flight times are approximate and based on recent schedules; your booking confirmation shows the exact timings. Ryanair also has seasonal flights from Glasgow Prestwick, Aberdeen, Exeter, Newquay, Norwich and Teesside.
Not sure which airport to choose for flights to Portugal? If your nearest airport has two or three airlines on the route, compare them first, as a cheaper fare from further away can cost more once you add parking or rail fares. Rather than checking every combination yourself, you can ask the TravelApp UK team to compare departure airports and airlines for you.
London has the widest choice, with five airlines across Gatwick, Luton and Stansted, plus British Airways flights from Heathrow and London City and seasonal easyJet flights from Southend. Gatwick is one of the busiest UK routes to Faro. Compare flights from London across all airports for your dates.
Manchester has year-round direct flights with Ryanair, Jet2 and easyJet, with Ryanair operating the most departures in recent schedules. See current flights from Manchester to compare options.
Birmingham has daily flights with Ryanair, Jet2 and easyJet, and East Midlands has daily flights with Ryanair and Jet2, plus seasonal TUI flights. Travellers in the Midlands can usually compare both airports for the same dates. Check flights from Birmingham to start your search.
Bristol is one of the busiest UK routes to Faro, with Ryanair, easyJet and Jet2 all flying direct. Bournemouth has year-round flights, while Southampton and Cardiff add options in season. Compare flights from Bristol alongside your other nearby airports.
Leeds Bradford has Jet2 and Ryanair flights to Faro, Liverpool has easyJet, Ryanair and Jet2, and Newcastle has Jet2 and Ryanair, plus seasonal easyJet flights. If you live between two of these airports, comparing both can widen your choice of dates. See flights from Leeds or flights from Newcastle.
Edinburgh has direct flights with Jet2 and Ryanair, and Glasgow has Jet2 and easyJet. Flights from Scotland take around 3 hours 25 minutes. Check flights from Edinburgh or flights from Glasgow for your dates.
Tell the TravelApp UK team your nearest airports, travel dates, number of travellers and baggage needs, and they can compare the options for you.
Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2 and Wizz Air all fly direct from the UK to Faro, with TUI adding seasonal flights from selected airports and British Airways offering a full-service option from London. The right choice depends less on the airline name and more on how much luggage you need, where you live and what time you want to fly.
Ryanair flies to Faro from more than a dozen UK airports. easyJet flies from London Gatwick, Luton and Southend as well as Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow, Newcastle, Southampton and Belfast.
The headline fares are often low, but the basic fare usually covers only a small bag:
Ryanair: every fare includes one small bag (40 x 30 x 20 cm) that fits under the seat. A 10kg overhead cabin bag (55 x 40 x 20 cm) needs the paid Priority & 2 Cabin Bags option, and hold bags of 10kg, 20kg or 23kg cost extra. Check Ryanair's current bag policy before booking.
easyJet: every fare includes a slightly larger under-seat bag (45 x 36 x 20 cm, up to 15kg). A large cabin bag (56 x 45 x 25 cm, up to 15kg) is included with the Inclusive Plus fare and for easyJet Plus members, but costs extra on standard fares, even with an Up Front or Extra Legroom seat. Hold luggage is extra unless your fare includes it. See easyJet's cabin bag rules.
Seats: choosing a seat is usually an extra charge on both airlines, which matters if you want to sit together.
Wizz Air is also worth adding to a London search, with direct flights from Luton and Gatwick. Its free bag is 40 x 30 x 20 cm and up to 10kg, and a larger 10kg trolley bag (55 x 40 x 23 cm) needs WIZZ Priority.
When to choose: Ryanair or easyJet usually suit solo travellers and couples on a short break who can travel with an under-seat bag, especially outside school holidays.
When to compare alternatives: if you need a cabin case and a hold bag each, want guaranteed seats together or prefer a particular departure time, the extras can close the gap with Jet2 or British Airways.
Jet2 flies to Faro from London Gatwick, Luton and Stansted, Birmingham, East Midlands, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds Bradford, Newcastle, Bristol, Bournemouth, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Belfast. Its Gatwick base opened in March 2026.
On Jet2.com flights, every passenger (excluding infants) can take a 10kg cabin bag (56 x 45 x 25 cm) and a small under-seat bag (40 x 30 x 20 cm) at no extra cost. Hold bags of up to 22kg are a paid extra. This makes Jet2 straightforward for travellers who want a proper cabin case without paying for priority boarding.
TUI launched summer flights from Cardiff to Faro in May 2026, mainly sold as part of TUI holidays, and also flies seasonally from East Midlands.
There is an important difference between the options:
Flight-only ticket: you book the flight and add bags, seats and transfers yourself.
Package holiday: flights and accommodation are booked together, and may bundle extras such as hold luggage or transfers. Check exactly what is included.
Adding extras separately: a low fare plus bags, seats and a taxi from Faro Airport can cost more or less than a package.
When to choose: families who want a cabin bag included, or anyone who would rather book flights and a hotel together, may find Jet2 or a package good value.
When to compare alternatives: if you are travelling light, already have accommodation or live closer to an airport Jet2 does not serve, a low-cost flight-only fare may work out cheaper. TravelApp UK can also price flight and hotel packages so you can compare both.
British Airways flies to Faro year-round from London Gatwick, with flights operated by BA Euroflyer. It also has a few weekly flights from London Heathrow and a limited service from London City, mainly in summer.
BA's Basic fares are hand baggage only, while its other economy fares include at least one 23kg checked bag. All passengers can take a cabin bag (56 x 45 x 25 cm) and a handbag or small backpack (40 x 30 x 15 cm). BA Club members can earn Avios on eligible flights, but Avios do not automatically make a ticket cheaper, so compare the cash price too.
When to choose: BA can suit travellers who need a checked bag anyway, live close to Heathrow or London City, or want to collect Avios. Once a checked bag is added to a budget fare, the difference in price can be smaller than it first looks.
When to compare alternatives: for hand-luggage trips from outside London, a budget airline from your local airport will often be more practical.

There is no reliable fixed booking window for July and August. A year-round data shows booking about 5 weeks ahead from Manchester and Edinburgh has beaten last-minute prices, while its London data points to about 16 weeks ahead for the lowest fares. These figures cover the whole year, not just school holidays.
For peak summer, the practical advice is to book once your dates are fixed, particularly if you need several seats together or want weekend or morning departures, as these are usually the first to go.
Sometimes, but it depends on the route. Tuesday has been the cheapest day to fly from Manchester and Wednesday from Edinburgh, but Sunday from London and Monday from Birmingham. Saturday has been the most expensive day from Manchester, Edinburgh and Birmingham. No weekday guarantees the lowest fare, so compare a few days either side of your preferred dates.
Fares usually rise as seats sell, so the cheapest seats on popular dates tend to go first. Late deals do appear on quieter dates, as our guide to last-minute flight deals explains, but they are hard to rely on for school holidays.
The cheapest advertised fare is not always the cheapest trip. Before you pay, add up:
The bags you need. Our hand luggage size guide compares cabin allowances for the main UK airlines.
Seat selection, if sitting together matters.
Sports equipment, if you are taking golf clubs.
Travel to the airport and any parking, especially for early departures.
The final price and fare rules at checkout.
Golf clubs are treated as sports equipment rather than a standard hold bag:
Ryanair: golf clubs go in the hold for a fee, up to 20kg.
easyJet: golf clubs are booked as sports equipment for a fee, up to 20kg per item. The weight cannot be shared with your hold bag.
Jet2: add a golf bag of up to 22kg when booking online, for an extra charge.
British Airways: a golf bag counts as one item of your checked allowance if your fare includes checked baggage, and it is handled as an oversize item. Tell BA when you book, ideally more than 72 hours before you fly, and use the oversize bag drop at the airport. See BA's sports equipment rules.
Fees change, so check the price for your flight before paying.
Check the allowance for every passenger, not just one adult. Ryanair and Jet2 carry some baby equipment such as pushchairs and car seats free of charge, but rules differ between airlines, and one adult's allowance cannot always be shared across a booking. If you are travelling as a family, the TravelApp UK team can compare fares with the bags and seats you need already included.
TravelApp UK offers flexible payment options on eligible bookings, including instalment plans and Klarna on selected holidays and larger bookings. A deposit may secure some bookings, with the balance due before ticketing or departure, although special fares and last-minute bookings may need full payment straight away. See our payment policy and booking conditions, and confirm the options for your booking before paying.
ATOL protection applies to qualifying package holidays and flight-inclusive bookings, not every standalone flight or hotel booking. The Civil Aviation Authority explains how ATOL works.
