Spain is one of the easiest European countries to reach from the UK, with direct flights serving major mainland cities, Mediterranean destinations and the country's island airports.
The right flight depends on two things: where you are starting in the UK and where you are staying in Spain. A traveller heading to Benidorm will usually want to search Alicante rather than Madrid, while someone staying in southern Tenerife should compare flights to Tenerife South, since it is the island's only airport with direct UK services.
Major Spanish destinations with UK connectivity include Madrid, Barcelona, Málaga, Alicante, Valencia, Seville, Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Exact routes vary by airport, airline and travel date, with some leisure services operating seasonally. Aena's airport network pages confirm extensive UK connections across Spain while noting that airline schedules can change.
Price is another important part of the decision. A £40 flight is not necessarily cheaper once you add baggage, seat selection, airport parking, rail travel and transfers. Compare the total journey cost, not just the advertised airfare.

A direct flight from the UK to mainland Spain generally takes around 2 to 3 hours. Flights to the Canary Islands usually take around 4 to 4.5 hours.
| Route | Approximate direct flight time |
| London → Madrid | 2h 15m–2h 40m |
| London → Barcelona | 2h–2h 20m |
| London → Málaga | 2h 45m–3h |
| London → Alicante | 2h 30m–2h 50m |

| Manchester → Alicante | 2h 40m–3h |
These are approximate planning figures based on typical scheduled flight times, not guaranteed durations. Actual timings can vary because of aircraft type, routing, wind and air traffic.
Direct flights are widely available because Spain has strong UK demand and a large network of leisure and city routes.
A direct flight can be useful when you want a shorter total journey, no airport connection, simpler baggage arrangements, less risk of missing a connection, a straightforward family trip, or a short city break.
A connecting flight can still be worthwhile when there is no convenient direct service, the connection gives you better travel times, you need a specific Spanish destination, you are building a multi-city itinerary, or the total price works better for your dates.
Do not assume that a direct flight is always cheaper. Compare the total fare and journey time.
For a general overview of pricing patterns before narrowing down to Spain, TravelApp's guide to cheap flights to Spain covers the basics of when and how to search.
Search the airports you can realistically reach. For someone living in Yorkshire, a flight from Leeds Bradford or Manchester may work out better than a cheaper-looking London fare once rail travel, fuel and parking are included.
Your destination should drive the airport search. For example: Benidorm needs Alicante (ALC), the Costa del Sol needs Málaga (AGP), Madrid needs Madrid-Barajas (MAD), Barcelona needs Barcelona-El Prat (BCN), Mallorca needs Palma (PMI), and Tenerife needs Tenerife South (TFS), regardless of which part of the island you're staying in.
Flying into a distant airport simply because the airfare is lower can create a much more expensive transfer.
Compare what is actually included in the fare: personal item, cabin baggage, checked baggage, seat selection, priority boarding and other optional charges. Two apparently similar fares can have very different final prices.
For more guidance, see TravelApp's hand luggage guide.
If your plans allow it, compare nearby departure and return dates. Fares can change according to demand, available seats and seasonal capacity. There is no universal rule that one particular weekday or booking window will always be cheapest.
Spain is particularly popular with UK travellers around Easter, UK summer school holidays, Christmas and New Year, and bank-holiday periods. If you have fixed holiday dates, compare flights early enough to give yourself a reasonable choice of departure times and airports.
A useful comparison is flight plus baggage plus seat fees plus airport travel plus parking plus Spanish transfer. This is a much better measure of value than the headline airfare alone.
There is no guaranteed booking window that produces the lowest fare on every Spain route. Prices depend on demand, airline capacity, destination, season and travel dates. A summer flight to Mallorca is a different market from a February flight to Madrid.
If your dates are flexible, compare prices across booking windows rather than relying on a fixed rule. If you need to travel during school holidays or on a specific weekend, start monitoring suitable flights earlier rather than relying on a last-minute price. The same principle applies to island routes, where availability can change more significantly with the season than on some major city routes.
Before paying for your flight, check the departure airport, arrival airport, whether the itinerary is direct or connecting, flight duration, cabin-bag allowance, checked-bag allowance, seat charges, fare restrictions, and change and cancellation rules.
Also factor in the cost of getting to the UK airport, airport parking, the Spanish airport transfer, your accommodation location, passport validity, Spain's entry requirements, travel insurance, and transit rules for any connecting flights.
This checklist is particularly useful when comparing low-cost fares, since the basic ticket may cover fewer extras than you expect.
British citizens travelling on a full British citizen passport can currently visit Spain without a visa for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, provided the trip meets the relevant Schengen conditions. This includes tourism and several other short-stay purposes.
Spain follows Schengen passport rules. GOV.UK's Spain travel advice states that your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before the date you arrive and must remain valid for at least three months after the date you plan to leave the Schengen area.
Border officials may also ask for evidence such as a return or onward ticket, accommodation details, travel insurance, or evidence of sufficient funds. It's worth checking what documents you actually need before travelling abroad so nothing catches you out at the airport.
The EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) is now fully operational across the Schengen area, with full operation confirmed by industry body ABTA as having begun on 10 April 2026. EES records travel-document details and biometric data, such as a facial photo and fingerprints, at the Schengen external border on your first registered crossing, with that record valid for three years. Border procedures can take a little longer while the system beds in, so it's worth allowing extra time.
There is no separate EES application to complete before flying to Spain. Registration happens automatically at the border.
ETIAS is a separate pre-travel authorisation scheme from EES and is not yet required for UK travellers. As of September 2026, there is no confirmed launch date. An earlier working target of the last quarter of 2026 has since been dropped from official EU communications, and the European Commission's position is that it will only announce a start date a few months before the system goes live.
There is no ETIAS application open yet, and the only official channel, when one does open, will be the EU's own travel-europe.europa.eu website, so treat any other site offering to process an application now as untrustworthy. If you're travelling later in 2026 or into 2027, check the latest official requirements closer to departure rather than assuming a specific date applies.
Spain offers very different types of holidays depending on where you fly. Spain's official tourism board is a useful starting point for regional listings and events.
For deeper planning beyond flights, Spain's official tourism board is a useful starting point for regional listings and events.
Spain's capital combines major art museums including the Prado and Reina Sofía with wide boulevards, historic plazas and a lively tapas and nightlife scene, and works well as either a city-break destination or a stopover before heading elsewhere in the country.
Known for Gaudí's architecture, including the Sagrada Família, alongside Gothic Quarter streets, Mediterranean beaches and a strong food scene, Barcelona suits both short city breaks and longer stays.
Andalusia's southern coast combines beach resorts with Málaga's own galleries, old town and growing food scene, making it a popular base for both relaxed beach holidays and day trips inland.
Andalusia's capital is known for flamenco, the Alcázar palace, and a historic old town best visited outside the height of summer, when inland temperatures can climb considerably higher than on the coast.
Each island has its own character, from Mallorca's mix of beaches, mountains and Palma's old town, to Ibiza's nightlife and quieter coves, to Menorca's calmer, more family-oriented pace.
A year-round destination thanks to a mild climate, with volcanic landscapes, beaches and watersports, and a well-established winter-sun market for UK travellers.
Beyond the beaches, Spain offers walkable historic city centres, a strong regional food culture from Basque pintxos to Andalusian tapas, well-marked hiking routes in the Pyrenees and Sierra Nevada, and a packed festival calendar that varies by region and season. City breaks and beach holidays are easy to combine thanks to Spain's rail network and short domestic flight times, so a single trip doesn't have to mean choosing between the two.

The cheapest advertised flight is not always the cheapest way to reach your destination. Before booking, compare UK departure airport, flight fare, baggage, seat fees, airport travel, Spanish arrival airport, and onward transfer, added together.
For example, a slightly more expensive flight from a nearby airport may cost less overall than a cheaper ticket that requires a long journey to the airport and an expensive transfer after landing.
