LONDON — Every Air India flight to and from London Heathrow will have new or upgraded cabins from January 2027, the airline has announced. Air India has also increased seat capacity from the UK to India by moving two other routes to larger aircraft, adding thousands of extra seats each month on Air India UK flights.
For Heathrow passengers, the answer is January 2027. The last route to be upgraded is the daily London Heathrow to Bengaluru service, which will switch from an older Boeing 787-8 to one of Air India’s refurbished aircraft, according to Eastern Eye. The refurbished 787-8 has all-new cabin interiors, new seats and upgraded inflight entertainment.
The aircraft will have three cabins instead of two, introducing Air India premium economy to Bengaluru for the first time.
With this change, every Air India Heathrow flight will use new or upgraded cabins:
Heathrow–Delhi: a mix of Airbus A350-900 and Boeing 787-9 aircraft
Heathrow–Mumbai: new Boeing 787-9s and refurbished 787-8s
Heathrow–Bengaluru: refurbished 787-8s from January 2027
Air India has also switched two regional routes to the larger Boeing 777-300ER, replacing the smaller 787-8. The changes boost capacity on flights to Gujarat from London and flights to Punjab from the UK:
|
Route |
Flights |
Extra seats |
|
London Gatwick to Ahmedabad |
4 a week |
About 2,700 a month, each way |
|
Birmingham to Amritsar |
3 a week |
About 2,000 a month, each way |
The 777-300ER brings First Class and onboard Wi-Fi to these routes. According to The Tribune, the aircraft has 8 First Class suites, 40 flat-bed Business Class seats and 280 Economy seats. That makes Air India’s flat-bed business class available from Gatwick and Birmingham as well as Heathrow.
Note for travellers: these routes use Air India’s existing 777 fleet, not newly built or fully refurbished aircraft. You’ll get a bigger aircraft and a First Class cabin, but the interiors differ from the new cabins on Heathrow routes.
More seats to Gujarat and Punjab. The extra capacity on London Gatwick to Ahmedabad flights and Birmingham to Amritsar flights helps at peak times such as school holidays, Diwali and the winter wedding season.
More cabin choice on long-haul flights. Choosing the best cabin class for long-haul travel depends on your budget and how much space you need. From January, premium economy gives Bengaluru passengers a middle option between economy and business class.
Check your aircraft. Cabins vary by route and aircraft, so check the seat map for your flight date before booking.
More seats don’t guarantee lower fares. Prices still depend on season, demand and how far ahead you book.
