You can fly direct to Vancouver from London Heathrow with Air Canada and British Airways, and from London Gatwick with British Airways, in around 9 hours 35 minutes to 9 hours 50 minutes. Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is Canada's main West Coast gateway, for the city itself, Whistler, Vancouver Island and Alaska cruises. From other UK airports, you can connect through London, Toronto, Calgary or Reykjavik.
The cheapest fares often leave out checked baggage, which matters on a 10-hour flight. Send TravelApp UK your dates and our team will compare suitable flights with the baggage you need.
There is no single cheapest month, but fares are often lower in spring and autumn, between the summer cruise season and the winter ski season. We found no reliable fare data proving May or September is always cheapest, so treat this as a general pattern.
Summer is Vancouver's busiest time. UK school holidays, warm weather and the Alaska cruise season, which sails from Vancouver, all push up demand. Winter brings ski trips to Whistler, about two hours' drive north, plus Christmas visits to family, so popular dates fill early.
Late spring and early autumn often bring lower demand and pleasant weather. September can still be warm and dry, while May sees longer days before the summer rush. Late autumn is quieter again, but Vancouver's rainy season usually starts around November.

Our guide on the best time to book flights explains how booking timing affects fares. If you are travelling at short notice, see our tips on where to find last-minute flight deals.
You cannot predict airfares exactly, but you can spot a good fare by watching prices over time and booking once a fare fits your budget. Airline prices change with demand and the seats left, so no booking day or week is guaranteed to be cheapest.
Track the route: price history and fare alert tools on flight comparison sites show whether today's fare is high or low for your dates. Our guide on how to find cheap flights from the UK has more ideas.
Book peak dates early: for summer, Christmas and ski weeks, seats on direct flights usually get more expensive as they sell.
Stay flexible: moving your trip by a day or two, or flying midweek, can make more difference than when you book.
Compare the full price: a fare that looks cheaper may cost more once you add a checked bag.
Flights are only part of the cost. Our tips on how to save money on holidays cover ways to keep spending down once you land. If you would rather not track fares yourself, send our team your dates and we will check the options available.
Direct flights to Vancouver leave only from London, so travellers elsewhere in the UK usually connect. A one-stop trip adds time but can work out simpler from your local airport.

Flights back to the UK are usually a little shorter, at about 9 hours 10 minutes to 9 hours 35 minutes.
Heathrow has the most choice, with Air Canada and British Airways flying direct every day. British Airways also flies from Gatwick, with a late-morning departure that lands in Vancouver in the early afternoon. Compare flights from London across both airports.
There is no direct flight, but Air Canada flies year-round from Manchester to Toronto, with onward flights to Vancouver. You can also connect through London or Reykjavik. See flights from Manchester.
From Glasgow, Air Transat connects via Toronto, mainly in summer. From Edinburgh, WestJet flies to Calgary in summer, with a short onward hop to Vancouver. Compare flights from Glasgow and flights from Edinburgh.
Most travellers connect via London, Dublin or Reykjavik. Our team can compare routes from Birmingham, Newcastle and Leeds.
Air Canada and British Airways are the only airlines flying nonstop from the UK to Vancouver. Air Canada offers onward flights across western Canada from its Vancouver hub. British Airways adds extra flights in summer, and since July 2026 it also sells connections to other Canadian cities with Porter Airlines on one ticket.
On a flight of almost 10 hours, the cabin matters too, so compare Economy, Premium Economy and Business with our guide to the best airline cabin classes for long-haul trips. Direct seats on summer and Christmas dates can sell out. Tell our team your preferred dates, and we can check whether moving a day or two changes the price.

Air Transat connects UK travellers to Vancouver via Toronto, from Gatwick, Manchester and Glasgow. WestJet flies from Heathrow to Calgary all year, with onward flights to Vancouver. Icelandair connects through Reykjavik, and some travellers turn the connection into a short stay in Iceland; see our guide to multi-city and stopover holidays. These routes can sometimes cost less, but they add several hours, so compare the total journey time and baggage rules.
On UK to Vancouver flights, the cheapest fares usually include a cabin bag but no checked bag. On a long trip with ski kit or cruise luggage, that can change which fare is really cheapest.
On flights between the UK and Canada, basic fares still let you bring a cabin bag and a personal item. What you usually lose is the free checked bag, plus free seat selection and changes.

Airlines differ on the size and weight of the cabin bag they allow, whether a second personal item is included, and whether the lowest fare includes a cabin bag at all. On long-haul flights to Vancouver, most fares include a cabin bag and a personal item, but the limits vary.
Size: most long-haul airlines allow a cabin bag of around 55 x 40 x 20 to 25 cm; British Airways allows up to 56 x 45 x 25 cm, plus a handbag or small backpack up to 40 x 30 x 15 cm.
Weight: limits range from around 7kg to 23kg depending on the airline, and some airlines do not set a weight limit if you can lift the bag yourself.
Personal item: a small bag that fits under the seat is usually allowed in addition to the cabin bag.
Short-haul connections: if part of your trip is on one of the budget airlines, its cheapest fare may include only an under-seat bag.
Choose a cabin bag that fits the smallest limit of every airline on your journey, measured including wheels and handles. A bag of around 55 x 40 x 20 cm fits most airlines' limits.
Check the cabin bag limits for each airline, including any connecting flight.
Measure your bag when it is packed, as soft bags can bulge past the limit.
Weigh your bag if your airline sets a weight limit.
Pick a light bag, so more of the weight allowance goes on your belongings.
Cabin bags must meet the airline's size and weight limits and airport security rules on liquids, sharp items and batteries. These rules apply on your outbound flight from the UK and your return from Vancouver.
Liquids: containers are usually limited to 100ml each in a clear resealable bag, although some UK airports with newer scanners allow more, so check the GOV.UK hand luggage rules and your departure airport.
Batteries: power banks and spare lithium batteries must go in your cabin bag, not checked baggage.
Sharp items and tools: knives, scissors over a set length and most tools must go in checked baggage.
Full flights: on busy flights, staff may ask you to check your cabin bag at the gate.
On connecting trips with two airlines, baggage rules can differ on each flight, so confirm your bags are checked through to Vancouver. Skis and snowboards usually count as checked baggage or sports equipment, so add them when you book. Our hand luggage size guide covers cabin bag sizes.
When you enquire, tell us how many bags and any sports equipment you are taking, and our team will compare fares on that basis.
Vancouver International Airport is about 25 minutes from downtown on the Canada Line SkyTrain. The airport sits on Sea Island in Richmond, south of the city.
Canada Line: the station is inside the terminal, and trains run to Waterfront Station downtown in around 25 minutes. A YVR AddFare is charged on trips leaving the airport.
Cruise passengers: Canada Place cruise terminal is a short walk from Waterfront Station.
Whistler: about two hours' drive north on the Sea-to-Sky Highway, by coach, shuttle or hire car.
Taxis and rideshare: available outside arrivals; journey times depend on traffic.
British citizens do not usually need a visa for a short visit to Canada, but they do need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to fly there. An eTA is not a visa and does not guarantee entry.
Cost: CAN$7, paid online.
Validity: up to five years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
Passport link: the eTA is linked to the passport you applied with. A new passport needs a new eTA, so if yours is due for renewal, check how long UK passport renewal takes before you apply.
Timing: most are approved within minutes, but some take several days. The Government of Canada advises applying before you book.
Connections: you need an eTA even if you only change planes in Toronto or Calgary.
Apply only on the official Government of Canada eTA page, as other sites may charge extra. If you are joining an Alaska cruise that calls at US ports, check US entry rules too. For other passports, see GOV.UK Canada entry requirements. TravelApp UK cannot apply for or approve an eTA. Our travel documents checklist can help you prepare, and our list of travel document mistakes to avoid covers common problems at check-in.

Vancouver is 8 hours behind the UK for most of the year, so expect jet lag on arrival.
Canada uses the Canadian dollar (CAD). Cards and contactless payments are widely accepted.
English is the main language in Vancouver. French is also an official language of Canada.
The Canada Line links the airport to downtown, and SkyTrain, buses and the SeaBus cover the wider city.
Vancouver has mild, wet winters and warm, mostly dry summers. The mountains nearby get heavy snow.
Basic fares usually exclude a checked bag, so add ski or cruise luggage before you compare prices.
You can add paid bags, seats and transfers to Whistler or the cruise port before you travel. Budget for the CAN$7 eTA, and arrange travel insurance with strong medical cover, as healthcare in Canada can be expensive for visitors. GOV.UK has advice on choosing foreign travel insurance.
Vancouver International (YVR) is the only airport with direct UK flights. Calgary (YYC) suits trips focused on the Rockies.
Direct flights run from Heathrow all year. Other UK airports need a connection, and some, such as Edinburgh to Calgary, run only in summer.
British citizens need an approved eTA linked to the passport they travel on.
Find answers to common questions about traveling to Vancouver
A direct flight from London to Vancouver takes approximately 9 hours and 35 minutes. The exact journey time depends on the airline, weather conditions and flight schedule. Flights with a stopover take longer, depending on the connecting airport and layover.
Air Canada and British Airways operate direct flights from London Heathrow (LHR) to Vancouver International Airport (YVR). British Airways also operates seasonal direct flights from London Gatwick (LGW). Travellers departing from Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh or other UK airports can compare connecting flights through London or other international hubs.
Flight prices vary depending on the departure airport, travel dates, airline and demand. November to March can offer lower fares outside busy holiday periods, although Christmas, New Year and the winter ski season can increase prices. July and August are popular months for visiting Vancouver, so booking early and comparing nearby dates may help you find better fares.
Checked baggage depends on your airline, ticket type and fare conditions. Some economy fares include a checked suitcase, while basic or light fares may charge extra. Before booking, check the permitted cabin baggage, checked baggage allowance, weight limits and additional fees. Comparing the total cost, including any baggage you need, helps you choose the most suitable fare.
British citizens travelling to Canada by air for a short visit generally do not need a visitor visa, but they must obtain an approved Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before boarding, unless an exemption applies. The eTA costs CAN$7 through the official Government of Canada website and is usually valid for up to five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. Apply well before your journey, as some applications take longer to process.
The Canada Line SkyTrain connects Vancouver International Airport (YVR) with downtown Vancouver. The journey to Waterfront Station takes approximately 25 minutes, making it a convenient option for many travellers. Taxis, ride-hailing services and private transfers are also available. Check current fares and airport pickup arrangements before travelling, particularly if you have bulky luggage or ski equipment.
There is no guaranteed best time to book flights to Vancouver, as fares change with demand, seat availability and airline pricing. If you plan to travel during the summer holidays, Christmas or the winter ski season, comparing fares several months ahead gives you more time to assess your options. Check different departure dates, compare alternative UK airports where practical and review baggage charges before choosing your ticket.
Transit visa requirements depend on your passport, connecting airport, destination and whether you need to pass through border control. Some travellers may need a transit visa or other travel authorisation even if they are only changing planes. Check the official requirements for your nationality and transit country before booking a connecting flight.
