The best-value flight to Kuala Lumpur is the one with the lowest total cost, including baggage and connections, not always the lowest headline fare. To get the best value, compare these five things:
Non-stop vs one-stop: A direct flight from Heathrow saves several hours of travel time. A one-stop flight via a Middle Eastern hub can cost less and gives you more departure times.
Baggage: Lower economy fares are sometimes limited to cabin baggage. Add the cost of a 20kg to 30kg checked bag before comparing airlines.
Your nearest airport: For travellers outside the South East, a one-stop flight from Manchester or Birmingham can be cheaper overall than paying for trains, fuel and parking to reach Heathrow.
Layover length: Cheap tickets sometimes have layovers of 15 hours or more. Check the total travel time, so a small saving does not cost you a full day of your holiday.
Off-peak dates: Fares rise during UK school holidays, the summer break and Christmas and New Year. Being flexible by two or three days either side of your dates can lower the fare.
Rather than working through dozens of combinations, tell our team your dates and budget and we will shortlist the itineraries that fit. Our guide on how to find cheap flights from the UK has more tips.

Compare Airlines to Kuala Lumpur
When booking flights to Malaysia, check whether your whole itinerary is on one ticket rather than two separate bookings. Some low-cost search results combine separate flights, such as a European flight on one of the budget airlines with a separate long-haul flight, which adds risk:
On one ticket: if a delay makes you miss your connection, the airline is responsible for getting you to Kuala Lumpur, usually on the next available flight. Your bags are normally checked through to KUL.
On separate tickets: a missed connection caused by a delay is usually your cost. You may lose the second flight and need to clear immigration, collect your bags and check in again at the transit hub.
Transit and terminals: check whether your connection involves a change of terminal, such as at Dubai (DXB) or Istanbul (IST), and review the transit visa rules of your connecting country before you pay.
We can tell you whether an itinerary is on one ticket before you pay. Our checklist for multi-city and long-haul trips covers what else to confirm.
A direct, non-stop flight from London Heathrow to Kuala Lumpur takes around 12.5 to 13.5 hours, while the return flight to London takes around 13.5 to 14 hours because of headwinds.
Flying time is not the same as total travel time:
One-stop journeys: one-stop itineraries usually take 16 to 22 hours in total, including the layover.
Time difference: Malaysia is on UTC+8, so Kuala Lumpur is 8 hours ahead of the UK in winter and 7 hours ahead during British Summer Time. Flying east overnight, an evening departure from the UK usually lands in Malaysia the following afternoon or evening, local time.
Kuala Lumpur International Airport is Malaysia's main international gateway. It is in Sepang, about 45 to 50 km south of central Kuala Lumpur.
Terminal 1 handles full-service airlines, including Malaysia Airlines' London flights.
Terminal 2 (formerly klia2) is mainly used by low-cost airlines such as AirAsia.
Check your terminal on your booking, especially if you have an onward flight in Malaysia on another airline.
Getting into the city:
The KLIA Ekspres train runs from both terminals to KL Sentral in about 28 to 33 minutes.
Taxis and Grab ride-hailing take roughly 45 to 75 minutes, depending on traffic.
Not Subang. Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB) in Subang is a separate, smaller airport used mainly for domestic and regional flights. UK long-haul itineraries arrive at KUL, not SZB.
There is no month that is always cheapest for Kuala Lumpur. Fares move with demand, airline capacity and how far ahead you book.
Peak demand:
UK school holidays, Christmas and New Year.
Chinese New Year and Hari Raya, when travel within Asia is busy.
Quieter periods outside these dates often offer more choice.
Date flexibility usually matters more than the month itself. Compare a week or two either side of your ideal dates.
Booking ahead gives more choice of flights and times. No booking window guarantees the lowest fare.

To find lower fares to Kuala Lumpur (KUL), book early for peak dates and look at quieter months outside UK school holidays and Christmas, such as April, May, September and October. Check these three things before you book:
Compare airports: compare London Heathrow (LHR) with regional airports like Manchester (MAN) or Birmingham (BHX), as fares and routes differ between them.
Check baggage costs: lower headline fares sometimes leave out checked luggage. Add the cost of a 20kg to 30kg bag before comparing airlines.
Weigh up layovers: cheap tickets sometimes have layovers of 15 hours or more. Make sure a small saving does not cost you a whole day of your trip.
